Telephone-Based Coaching

Abstract: Purpose Many Americans continue to smoke, increasing their risk of disease and premature death. Both telephone-based counseling and in-person tobacco cessation classes may improve access for smokers seeking convenient support to quit. Little research has assessed whether such programs are effective in real-world clinical populations. “…Prior studies of health coaching interventions have shown coaching to be effective in promoting health behavior change and improving some health outcomes. 10 12 , 33 In particular, coaching toward a defined purpose to facilitate health behavior change—for example, tobacco cessation, 34 , 35 increasing physical activity, 12 , 36 , 37 or improving diet and weight management 11 ,12 —often results in a significant, measurable impact. However, unlike many coaching programs (and other health behavior interventions), the broad aims of Whole Health Coaching are not defined in advance; they are instead defined by participants in the course of the coaching relationship.…”

“…The reason for this latter criterion is that variables which do not predict outcome have been shown to decrease precision of the resulting propensity score estimators and violate positivity of the model (Westreich et al, 2011; Wyss et al, 2013). Using the inverse probability of treatment weighted method (IPTW; Boccio et al, 2015) of PSM, the SQ1.0 and SQ2.0 datasets were balanced, and a standardized difference of less than 0.10 was considered to be acceptable. The datasets were compared by conducting logistic regression analysis weighted by propensity scores.…”

“…One evaluation studied a government-sponsored health coaching program in Australia, which led to improvements in weight, exercise, and diet at 6 months ( O'Hara et al, 2012 ). U.S. insurer-sponsored wellness coaching programs showed coaching's positive impacts on body mass index (BMI) and smoking cessation ( Adams et al, 2013 ; Schmittdiel et al, 2017 ; Boccio et al, 2017 ). A wellness coaching program in an insured population produced small weight losses ( Tao et al, 2014 ).…”
