Telepathology consultation for frozen section diagnosis in China

Abstract: BackgroundTelepathology (TP) provides remote pathology services for primary diagnosis practices, including intraoperative consultation of surgical pathology; it has not been widely implemented in China. In this study, the results of an implementation were reported, which lasted for two and a half years, and demonstrated the experience of the diagnosis of the intraoperative frozen sections by using TP consultation platform of Southern Medical University and Guangzhou Huayin Medical Laboratory Center (SMU-HUAYIN… Show more

“…The results, with slightly different composition of large and small bdEVs, suggested that not all small RNAs are uniformly loaded from cells into EVs. Consistent with other reports 13,[38][39][40][41][42] , we also found that fragments of rRNA and tRNA, were more abundant than miRNAs in EVs, even without employing ligation-dependent sequencing library preparation 43 . Although some publications have reported a higher miRNA proportion in EVs 44, 45 than in cells, our results suggested that mapped miRNA reads and diversity gradually decreased from brain homogenate to large EVs and then small EVs.…”

“…Recently, based on the development of modern computer and electronic systems, especially the advent of whole-slide imaging (WSI) technology, which enabled digitization of histological slides, the field of digital pathology has greatly evolved [ 17 ]. The remote pathology analysis of histological slides using digital image transmission, namely telepathology, is getting increasingly used in routine practice [ 18 , 19 ], demonstrating a great potential to solve the problem of uneven distribution of medical resources. What’s more, traditional glass slides are fragile and hard to preserve for long, and the discoloration of tissue slides is inevitable [ 20 ], even for some rare and precious histological sections.…”

“…Full remote diagnosis by scanning slides has become a reality with WSIs that capture an entire slide at high magnification, and the rise of 5G technology is expected to accelerate the use of WSIs in remote diagnosis. As it was pointed out above, currently, there are a few operating remote diagnostic networks in various areas of the world (12)(13)(14). This trend will accelerate, allowing institutions to develop remote consultation systems that include outside expert pathologists more easily.…”
