Telepathology as an Aid in Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Abstract: Digital camera technology now allows for images to be taken directly through an eyepiece of the microscope. These images can be almost instantaneously e-mailed to a pathologist anywhere in the world for an immediate opinion. The technique provides for greater surety where doubt exists about the pathology during Mohs surgery.

“…Already, studies illustrate the benefits of digital slides in facilitating novel pathology education programs [1,2]. In subspecialty fields such as dermatopathology where access to an expert is limited, studies have documented the success of both static (store and forward) [3][4][5] and dynamic telepathology [6].…”

“…Thus, the use of teledermatopathology gains particular acceptance for consultation of other specialists, but also in situations when experts in dermatopathology are not available locally. [12][13][14][15][16] Nevertheless, telemedical diagnostics stands in general for presence of a subgroup of digitally transferrable informations, as all existing data on a patient are only accessible in direct contact with the patient. Furthermore, it is a known fact that in telepathology, especially at higher-power examinations, the image resolution is frequently affected.…”
