Teleostei fishes of the North Coast of Brazil and adjacent areas

Abstract: The North Coast of Brazil is a biogeographical area of the Exclusive Economic Zone of Brazil that share environmental features with region under influence of the Plume of the rio Amazon and Orinoco. Despite the relevance of the region’s fish fauna, in biogeo-graphic, ecologic, and commercial terms, this area is poorly known. This study presents the most complete and updated list of the bony fish fauna from the North Coast of Brazil, aiming to minimize our knowledge gap on such region's biodiversity. “…(2003a) and Marceniuk et al . (2021) as occurring in Brazilian waters based on one specimen (MCZ 101792), which was actually collected in the western North Atlantic outside the country's EEZ. Therefore, the two specimens of S. tristis collected off Rocas Atoll and Fernando de Noronha Archipelago between depths of 770 and 1020 m are the first records of the species in the Brazilian EEZ (Figure 4a).…”

“…Zu cristatus is a mesopelagic species, with a wide distribution in the tropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans (Angulo & López‐Sánchez, 2017; Olney & Hartel, 2016a; Sutton et al ., 2020). The presumed occurrence of the species in Brazilian waters ( e.g ., Menezes et al ., 2003b; Melo et al ., 2020; Marceniuk et al ., 2021) was based on a few records of the species in the western Tropical Atlantic outside the country's EEZ (MCZ 58928; MCZ 84634; NSMT‐P 40246) and also on larvae collected off Rio de Janeiro State (Bonecker et al ., 2014) and near the Martin Vaz Archipelago (Stocco & Joyeux, 2015). The eight specimens reported here, collected between depths of 40 and 800 m off the Rio Grande do Norte, Rocas Atoll and Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, are the first confirmed records of juvenile and adult specimens of Zu cristatus in the Brazilian EEZ (Figure 4b).…”

Species were further classified as primary marine, estuarine, or freshwater following Nelson (2016) and as pelagic, demersal, or benthonic following Marceniuk et al (2021b). The market value for the piramutaba and all other bycatch was obtained at Ver-o-Peso Market (Belém, Pará state, Brazil) by WSRS, APM and JPRJ.…”
