Telemetry ranging using software-defined radios

Abstract: Telemetry ranging is a technique that inserts ranging data measured by the spacecraft into the downlink telemetry stream, thereby avoiding the need to allocate downlink power for a ranging signal. This technique has many benefits depending on the mission profile, including increased data return, operational simplification, and spectrum efficiency. The present study considers a variation to the ranging technique presented in [1] in order to facilitate implementation in a software-defined radio (SDR). This imple… Show more

“…The spacecraft, instead of transmitting in downlink a replica of the received ranging signal (see Section III-D), samples its code phase and encodes it into 40 bits of the TM transfer frame. This technique has been initially proposed and implemented as a prototype by NASA in the studies [66]- [68]. Currently, ESA is performing internal studies on whether to consider it or not for implementation.…”

“…Then the I/Q baseband signals are obtained by mixing them with the quadrature local oscillator signal respectively, and the signal is digitized by the 12-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) [11] . After the analog signal is converted to a digital one with the ADC, the data rate extraction process is performed by a fixed-order halfband filter and a programmable Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter, and finally the signal data are transmitted to the baseband processor [12] .…”
