Telegeoprocessing: The integration of remote sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS) and telecommunication

Abstract: This paper aims to bring together most of the key issues involved in research in novel systems in telegeoprocessing. Telegeoprocessing can be de ned as a new discipline based on real-time spatial databases updated regularly by means of telecommunications systems in order to support problem solving and decision-making at any time and any place. It involves the integration of remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS) and telecommunications. Telegeoprocessing can be cat… Show more

“…It involves the integration of remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), GPS and telecommunications. The goals of telegeoprocessing are to improve real-time access to geographic information from anywhere in the world and to enhance the overall quality of decision-making at affordable costs (Xue et al 2002). Improved access to information and cost savings could be achieved by allowing a scientist to examine the situation remotely or to consult with specialists.…”

“…Digital pictures taken in the field can be relayed to the servers to update GIS database as frequently as needed [122]. Xue et al [124] suggested that WebGIS, mobile mapping (they termed it "Mobile Geoprocessing"), and TeleGIS (an integration of GIS and other communication techniques) are shaping a new field of study, namely, "telegeoprocessing". This is based on real-time spatial databases updated regularly by means of telecommunications to support problem solving and decision making at any time and any place.…”

“…This is based on real-time spatial databases updated regularly by means of telecommunications to support problem solving and decision making at any time and any place. Telegeoprocessing requires a seamless integration of four components, i.e., (i) remote sensing, GIS, GPS; (ii) telecommunications; (iii) real-time remote sensing imaging and processing; and (iv) real-time GIS [124].…”

“…The trend is towards multidimensional visualization of geospatial data especially with the availability of digital terrain model (DTM) data and light detection and ranging (LIDAR). The drive towards more integration of geospatial technologies within the geospatial domain and with other related domains (such as information technology and telecommunication) (Xue et al, 2002) has further enhanced the growth and development of geomatics applications.…”
