Telefetalcare: A first prototype of a wearable fetal electrocardiograph

Abstract: Fetal heart rate monitoring is fundamental to infer information about fetal health state during pregnancy. The cardiotocography (CTG) is the most common antepartum monitoring technique. Abdominal ECG recording represents the most valuable alternative to cardiotocography, as it allows passive, non invasive and long term fetal monitoring. Unluckily fetal ECG has low SNR and needs to be extracted from abdominal recordings using ad hoc algorithms. This work describes a prototype of a wearable fetal ECG electrocard… Show more

“…While, the software part was used to write algorithms and customized application for the networking and Fetal Heart Rate (FHR) monitoring systems. In [15] the system named, telefetalcare was built, to guarantee a deep continuous screening of fetal monitoring. Additionally, the proposed system allowed the pregnant women to monitor health state at home without moving to the hospital or asking for clinicians support.…”

“…For this reason, we started the Telefetalcare project [17], which aims to design and realize a wearable fetal tele-monitoring system that is able to collect FHR throughout the last period of the pregnancy. Its key point is the integration of a specific technology (i.e., wearable sensors and electronics) with consumer ICT devices (i.e., smartphones and tablets) and remote, high-level signal processing, data mining, and clinical decision support systems.…”

“…Nevertheless, also some specific niche applications, such as non-invasive fetal ECG, either requiring a large number [3], [4] or a reduced number [5] of electrodes to be placed on the maternal abdomen, could benefit from the adoption of easy-on wearable systems [6].…”
