et al.

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed serious challenges in multiple perspectives of human life. To diagnose COVID-19, oropharyngeal swab (OP SWAB) sampling is generally applied for viral nucleic acid (VNA) specimen collection. However, manual sampling exposes medical staff to a high risk of infection. Robotic sampling is promising to mitigate this risk to the minimum level, but traditional robot suffers from safety, cost, and control complexity issues for wide-scale deployment. In this work, we present soft robot… Show more

“…Although other automated sampling systems have tried to optimize the position of the camera, the limited field of view (FOV) hidden behind the face increases the difficulty of operation [8][9][10][11][12]. The developed system generates a virtual swab within the visually inaccessible area, overcoming the limitations of previous studies.…”

“…However, these systems still require a significant human workforce for the preparation of tasks such as attaching, cutting, and disposing of swabs. To overcome these challenges, some studies have expanded the functionality of the robots so that they can replace most of the tasks [8][9][10][11]. These robotic systems are designed to automatically recognize the location of the suspected COVID-19 patients using camera vision and to follow the sampling path.…”

“…Recent advances in soft robotic technology demonstrate a solution for dexterous robotic hand design with intrinsic compliance for safe and effective grasping and manipulation [14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22]. These examples provide a promising potential for OP swab sampling with enhanced dexterity and intended safety.…”
