In this paper we comment on design teaching and communication in the domain of architectural education, particularly in the initial parts of the design process, where hand sketching is applied. We are aware of advantages that electronic sketch devices incorporate, therefore we investigate their implementation in diverse phases of architectural studio education. We are testing our presumptions on site, running an experimental design studio with students at two universities: ETH Zurich and CVUT Prague. The focus lies in configuration and further use of Value Lab in teaching and in an adequate sketch application development. The tool is called ColLab sketch and its multi-interfacial manner fits large touch-tables as well as small tablets.

Feature-based Alignment Method for Projecting Virtual Content on a Movable Paper Map

In this paper we propose a feature-based alignment method for visualizing geographical content on a movable paper map using non-calibrated projector-camera pair. In order to project correctly aligned geographical content on a movable paper map, we detect two kinds of features: printed features and projected features on a paper map. First, we print landmark points as map features on the paper map for registration purpose. We then project landmark points onto the paper map. We then detect these printed and projected features simultaneously. The transformation from the projector coordinate system to the image coordinate system is estimated using the feature correspondences. This transformation is used to warp the geographical content before the corrected projection. In succeeding frames, the features are tracked in order to update the transformation. We evaluated our method against the motion of the paper map, the camera and the projector with average projection error of 9.5 pixels.

We propose a novel collaboration system using pen and paper. FreeTagpaper uses a camera set above a work table to recognize the visual tags printed on the paper to acquire the paper's ID and posture. From the paper ID, FreeTagpaper can retrieve the paper's size and format from a document management database. It then uses the format information to transmit images of handwritten notes to the other side and simultaneously projects the other side's handwritten notes onto this paper. Based on this mutual image sharing scheme, users can collaborate in real time using paper of any size, format, and posture. This report describes preliminary work on FreeTagpaper including the current implementation and essential experimental results.
