Although drilling in the Moroccan Basin failed to reach strata older than uppermost Jurassic, regional geology and geophysics combined with drilling results provide the basis for a reconstruction of the evolution of this basin and the adjacent margin since the Triassic. Rifting began around the Triassic/Jurassic boundary, and drifting probably started a little later, probably during the late Liassic (Domerian-Toarcian). Evaporites accumulated on the rifting margin prior to drifting, and possibly in the deepening adjacent oceanic basin during the late Liassic-earliest Dogger. Accumulation of thick turbidites in the basin characterized the Middle Jurassic-Neocomian interval, with a probable interruption during the early Late Jurassic "Atlantic" transgression at the time of widespread carbonate accumulation on all margins around the central Atlantic. The Upper Cretaceous through Cenozoic record reflects the predominant influences of oceanic circulation on sedimentation during that time. A major hiatus omits most of the Late Cretaceous, and the succeeding Cenozoic shows alternations of erosion and pelagic deposition. oo •< <~~ B ~F~~l 3 sS-I 1

RESUMEDans la région d'AH Bou Gummez la série sédimentaire se présente al'affleurement en deux grandes unités lithologiques principales subdivisées en huit formations. La premiere est d' age has inférieur amoyen. Elle RESUMENEn la región de Ait Bou Gummez del Alto Atlas central, la serie sedimentaria está esencialmente constituida por dos grandes unidades compuestas a su vez por ocho formaciones. La primera unidad es de edad Lias Inferior-Medio y está formada por depósi-tos carbonatados masivos o laminados con lamelibranquios muy grandes. La segunda es de edad Lias Superior y está constituida mayoritariamente por sedimentos detríticos con yesos, arcillas, y carbonatos abigarrados (rojo, verde, ocre).El análisis tectónico y las correlaciones transversales y longitudinales de las secciones litoestratigráficas en la zona del accidente tectónico de Jebel Tizal-Azourki (ATA) de dirección N7ü a E-W, indican un régimen extensional N-S desde el Sinemuriense hasta el Domeriense-Toarciense. Esta extensión generó fallas normales N7ü a E-W y fallas transcurrentes NI5ü a NW-SE, dando lugar a un horst asimétrico. El eje de este horst se desvía lateralmente hasta hacerse paralelo al accidente de Tizi N'Tirghist. El primer movimiento extensional E-W empezó a principios del Carixiense y continuó durante el Domeriense-Toarciense. Los indicadores cinemáticos y la cronología relativa de las direcciones de extensión permiten reconocer la siguiente secuencia: 1) una extensión simple N-S subperpendicular a la dirección principal N7ü del accidente ATA durante al Sinemuriense, controlada por un esfuerzo principal mínimo 0'3 orientado N-S; 2) una extensión E-W que comenzó en el Carixiense, mientras todavía perduraba la extensión NS, paralelamente a la dirección principal N7ü, que anuncia el comienzo del régimen transtensivo controlado por un esfuerzo principal mínimo (0'3) de dirección NE-SW a NNE-SSW. Durante la compresión atlásica, el accidente ATA se reactiva como falla inversa cabalgante. La vergencia tanto al sur como al norte a lo largo del accidente ATA se podría explicar por el efecto de fallas transcurrentes de zócalo de dirección NE-SW y NW-SE. Estas fallas podrían haber originado las estructuras en Z y en S que aparecen a lo largo del Alto Atlas central de dirección EW.
