Tectonically Controlled Nearshore Deposition: Cozzette Sandstone, Book Cliffs, Colorado, U.S.A

Abstract: The Book Cliffs of eastern Utah and western Colorado have been pivotal in the development of outcrop-based sequence stratigraphic concepts for nonmarine to shallow marine siliciclastic depositional settings. Prior studies in this area, and more generally in the Cretaceous western interior foreland basin of North America, have concluded that nearshore accumulation is controlled for the most part by the interaction between oscillatory eustatic change and longer-term regional patterns of flexural subsidence. “…Although this type of deposition is commonly observed in modern settings, few publications of subsurface units have been documented (cf. Wehr, ; Madof et al ., ). The Viking deposits in the study area present an ideal opportunity to assess variability in depositional geometries of coeval transgressive and regressive strata and to discuss methodologies for recognizing similar lateral stratal relations in the rock record.…”

“…Schematic representation of the variability and diachronous nature of the maximum flooding surface (MFS) in coeval depositional packages (modified from Madof et al ., ). The position of the MFS is stratigraphically higher in the thick transgressive systems tracts areas and has a significantly younger age.…”

“…Fielding et al (2014) attributed abnormal stratal thickening and thinning trends along depositional dip within the Cenomanian Peay Sandstone Member of the Frontier Formation within the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, to local foreland basin structural growth. Finally, Madof et al (2015) have linked anomalies in nearshore sediment accumulation patterns in the Cozzette Sandstone of the easternmost Book Cliffs, Colorado, to syn-depositional and post-depositional tectonic tilting.…”
