Técnica de Criação e Aspectos Biológicos de Atheloca subrufella (Hulst) (Lepidoptera: Phycitidae) em Frutos de Coqueiro

Abstract: Rearing Technique and Biological Traits of Atheloca subrufella (Hulst) (Lepidoptera: Phyci dae) in Coconut Fruits.Larvae of the coconut moth Atheloca subrufella (Hulst) develop in lowers and fruits of coconut, Cocos nucifera, causing precocious abscission of these structures and, hence, yield decrease. This work studied a feasible and suitable rearing technique for A. subrufella using fruits of coconut. We irst determined the appropriate density of larvae to be reared per coconut fruit (among two, three, four … Show more

“…and other inflorescence feeding Lepidoptera, including detritus feeders. Some of these other Lepidoptera will damage female flowers, as Bondar ( 1940a , b ), Santana ( 2008 ), and Santana et al ( 2009 ) reported for Atheloca bondari and A. subrufella and Bondar ( 1940a , b ) reported for Cadra cautella . In this situation, the presence of B. nuciferae could lead to damage to female flowers, although the extent and frequency to which this happens would need to be investigated.…”

“…Os insetos foram mantidos a 25 ± 1,5 o C, 70 ± 5% de umidade relativa e fotofase de 13h. O método de criação de A. subrufella empregado neste estudo foi o de Santana (2008). Para a criação foram utilizados frutos do terceiro cacho de coqueiro anão-verde, após a abertura total da infl orescência, com aproximadamente 10 a 12 cm de comprimento e 8 a 10 cm de diâmetro, isentos de injúrias por pragas ou sintomas de fi topatógenos.…”

“…Larvae of different species of moths feed on the male and female flowers of coconuts (Bondar, 1940; Moore, 2001; Cock and Burris, 2013). The moths can complete their life cycle in developing nuts (Bento et al ., 2006; Santana et al ., 2010), but their occurrence in nuts is very low. This suggests that the larvae of moths are not able to bore the exocarp of the nuts.…”
