Technology for fostering intergenerational connectivity: scoping review protocol

Abstract: BackgroundThe simultaneous increase in geographically dispersed families and general decrease in engagement in local communities is resulting in fewer opportunities for youth and older adults interact in meaningful ways. Technology is becoming increasingly pervasive and flexible and providing new opportunities to foster intergenerational connection that can be implemented and evaluated across a multitude of populations and contexts. “…The benefits of intergenerational interaction have been well documented. Not only do interactions between different generations offer a healthy mechanism for the mutual exchange of knowledge, skills, and values, they also improve the social skills of both younger and older groups ( Boger & Mercer, 2017 ). “…We performed a web-based automated search in digital libraries [18,36] for IGC-based studies published in proposed scientific databases [36], including ACM Digital Library (ACM), IEEE Xplore (IEEE), Taylor and Francis Online (TnD), Science Direct (SD), and ISI Web of Sciences (WoS). The preliminary search for the deletion of duplicates revealed 281 out of 713 publications, and 75 publications were selected for analysis based on the SLR process and scope of the study [37]. The overview of the whole structured review process is outlined in Fig.…”

“…The advent of an aging society means that intergenerational relationships often last longer than ever before (Kemp, 2005). Intergenerational understanding creates a strong support network, in turn increasing friendship, sharing and confidence between generations and relieving the social pressures of aging (Boger & Mercer, 2017;Springate, Atkinson, & Martin, 2008). There is also literature that suggests that the more children understand of older adults the more older adults feel a sense of belonging, live in peace and age comfortably when they are still living independently in the community.…”
