Technology and Pro-Environmental Behavior in Urban Households: How Technologies Mediate Domestic Routines

Abstract: This paper investigates environmental behavior in Russian households by the analysis of 24 indepth interviews conducted in typical households of the city of Moscow. Using the STS tools such as 'script' and 'moral agency' it discovers how technologies shape domestic routines and pro-environmental behavior of their users and how the users shape the resource consumption of technological artifacts. “…This choice is determined by the time and resource costs, the efforts that need to be made to take environmental actions, and the determining factor here is what people consider rational for themselves (i.e., the values of an economy of unlimited growth or a green economy values, which will be the basis for the actions taken) (Kollmuss and Agyeman, 2002). Summarizing the meta-studies, it is possible to say that the higher the level of convenience of the technological infrastructure and the greater the control by institutions, as well as the higher the level of an individual's sense of personal responsibility for the actions performed, the more likely it is to practice ecologicalsustainable practices and strengthened environmentally friendly norms of behavior are (Steg and Vlek, 2009;Chernovich, 2013).
