Technology and Non-Interpersonal Relationships

Abstract

This article examines how our interactions with technology-infused objects affect human relationships and spirituality. From a Christian perspective, how do non-interpersonal relationships influence our relationships with others and with God? Using Martin Buber’s (1958/2000) I-Thou Framework and Scripture, we examine technology that is made by people yet has capabilities greater than people do in a growing number of contexts. We discuss boundaries and trust with respect to how we relate to these objects as non-persons. We conclude with implications for business decision-making.
