Technology adoption in response to changes in market conditions: Evidence from the US petroleum refining industry

Abstract: This paper analyzes the determinants of the levels and rates of technology adoption for petroleum refineries that survived the period 1980-1989, during which the conditions of product demand and crude oil supply changed significantly. Regression models are specified to investigate the growth of technology-related capacity, the growth of technology complexity, and the rates of adoption estimated from a diffuse model of technology use. Both levels and rates of adoption are hypothesized to be affected by refinery… Show more

“…As suggested by Martin-Tapia, Aragon-Correa, and M. E. Senise- Barrio (2008), (see also Chen 2005), in highly uncertain and competitive markets, firms may behave in a more cautious way. In other words, they may choose to rather compete on dimensions other than environmental ones.…”

“…Martin-Tapia, Aragon-Correa, and Senise-Barrio (2008) demonstrate that when the perceived uncertainty level is low or medium, there is a positive relationship between environmental strategy and export intensity, but this relationship is not significant when the level is high. In a different context, Chen (2005) argues that increases in market uncertainty and competition would delay the use of new technologies. Nevertheless, as stressed by several scholars (e.g.…”

“…This, in turn, increases the information requirement of beverage manufacturers as they must collect and track data related to its suppliers and manufacturing centres. While our fourth finding is unique to industry‐level research on internet technology adoption, it is consistent with existing research examining the adoption of other technologies such as those in the US petroleum refining industry (Chen, 2005).…”

“…In the early 1980s, refineries were built to refine low-sulphur high-quality crude, but these were forced to turn to supplies of less expensive, heavier crudes, while still being required to produce the high-quality products that the market was demanding, and that met tougher environmental regulations (Chen 2005); this made refining operations more complex and in need of substantial investment.…”
