Technologies for smart grids: A brief review

Abstract: In electrical power systems smart grid is widely recognized as the new solution that must be developed to manage distributed network tackling the increment of renewable energies. Through monitoring capability, data integration, effective communication, advanced analysis and system control the smart grid can meet the power demand as well as increase total efficiency and reduce consumption and costs. Many different technologies must converge to create a smart grid as a storage systems utilized as an energy buffe… Show more

“…One answer is offered by the implementation of EV charging strategies, through aggregation agents, for containing the impact on the grid, guaranteeing the quality of the service [33]. The implementation of a real charging strategy is strictly related to a deployment of smart-grid technologies, such as smart meters, ICT and Energy Storage Systems [34], [38].…”

“…Such network structure generally utilizes wireless radio connection, dial-up lines, Ethernet, and IP protocol to support the communication requirements in a SCADA system. However, such communication mediums may face challenge of data congestion due to high volume of data information in SG systems [58]. Therefore, a communication structure/system that would handle big data flow would be required for future smart grid application.…”

“…Many modifications are occurring to progress the energy efficiency and environmental sustainability of the generation, transport and final use sectors, involving the need to modernize the electric grids [1][2][3][4]. The first revolution deals with the deregulation of the electricity trade, with the introduction of markets: the service has been opened to the generation plants owners and also to the final users; this has influenced operational functions originally demanded to Transmission and Distribution System Operators (TSO, DSO) [5][6][7].…”
