Technologies Driving the Shift to Smart Farming: A Review

Abstract: As today's agriculture industry is facing numerous challenges, including climate changes, encroachment of the urban environment and lack of qualified farmers, there is a need for new practices to ensure sustainable agriculture and food supply. Consequently, there is an emphasis on upgrading the farming practices by shifting towards Smart Farming (SF) -utilizing advanced information and communication technologies to improve the quantity and quality of the crop with minimal labor interference. SF has gained lots… Show more

“…Communication protocols for hydroponics are discussed in various reviews, including [23][24], [29]. Microcontrollers and sensors play a crucial role in hydroponics and are considered in the literature, as showcased in [25][26][27][28]. Large greenhouses are increasingly adopting hydroponic farming methods, as highlighted in [30] The integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and IoT has helped the agricultural sector with predictions, accurate parameter measurements, and improved yields, as demonstrated in surveys [31].…”

“…potential, impedance, current). This class of sensors has proven to be very interesting due to the wide range of applications, ranging from healthcare [3] to agri-food smart applications [4] or environmental monitoring [5]. With these types of sensors, one of the most widespread applications rely on ions quantification within bio-fluids (sweat, plasma) to monitor human health in particular in term of hydration state, muscular exercise, and different types of diseases [6].…”

“…To guarantee suitable analysis and interpretation, the survey was carried out on 588 papers that were published on the IEEE database using Cochrane methodology. After analysing the contributions provided by the papers, research themes were determined in order to ascertain the technology needed to create science fiction [14] . Data analysis, actuators and machines, big data, sensors, and communication are the themes that have been found.…”
