Technologies and Reformed-Based Science Instruction: The Examination of a Professional Development Model Focused on Supporting Science Teaching and Learning with Technologies

Abstract: While access to computers, other technologies, and cyber-enabled resources that could be leveraged for enhancing student learning in science is increasing, generally it has been found that teachers use technology more for administrative purposes or to support traditional instruction. This use of technology, especially to support traditional instruction, sits in opposition to most recent standards documents in science education that call for student involvement in evidence-based sense-making activities. Many se… Show more

“…Maker pedagogy integrates different technologies, digital and analog, that support processes of design and fabrication. Integrating different technologies into pedagogy is most effective when situated within disciplinary inquiry (Campbell et al, 2014;Mishra & Koehler, 2006). Effective technology-related PD includes opportunities for teachers to engage in technology-mediated learning themselves, to reflect on that learning alongside data of students engaging in similar activities, and finally the modification of curricular activities to fit their particular pedagogical contexts (Gerard et al, 2011).…”

“…Model-oriented approaches to teaching natural science, especially with interactive simulations, have increased student engagement and understanding (Bo et al, 2018). Simulation has the potential to help students understand modeling as a fundamental scientific epistemic activity (Campbell et al, 2015). The simulation through a virtual laboratory can be conducted using Phet simulation media.…”

“…Los retos educativos incluyen la creación de cursos sobre el uso de las herramientas digitales en el salón de clases (Mendizábal, 2017; Salas y Salas, 2018). De hecho, los profesores del Siglo XXI utilizan nuevos medios y canales de comunicación para el desarrollo de las actividades escolares (Campbell, Longhurst, Wang, Hsu y Coster, 2015;Mendizábal, 2017;Rabah, 2015;Salas, 2018).…”
