Innovation activities of private firms are crucial for sustainable economic growth in every society. Therefore, the majority of firms around the world spend large amounts of capital (money, time, and human resources) in searching for novel innovative opportunities in the marketplace. In our study, we sought to understand how the openness of firms’ external search strategies (external search breadth and external search depth) affects firms’ innovation capabilities as measured by awareness, decision-making, interpretation, and implementation capability. Furthermore, using survey data collected from 112 Chinese manufacturing firms over a six-month period, this study conducted an empirical analysis about the association between firms’ innovation capabilities on the type of innovation (exploratory innovation vs. exploitative innovation). This study also provides important managerial insights for manufacturing companies.

Las empresas de manufactura se esfuerzan por ser innovadoras y, de esta manera, ser competitivas en el mercado. Estas empresas son muy importantes en una economía emergente debido a su contribución al producto bruto interno y a la generación de puestos de trabajo para la población. Por ello, el objetivo de este estudio es identificar cuáles son los factores internos y externos que mejoran la capacidad de innovación de las empresas peruanas de manufactura y, a su vez, favorecen su competitividad. Para ello, se aplicó un enfoque cualitativo basado en el modelo de las seis C de Glaser, que forma parte de la teoría fundamentada, y se entrevistó a los gerentes de las empresas de manufactura peruanas. A partir del análisis y procesamiento de estos datos con el software de análisis cualitativo Atlas ti, se encontró que los proveedores y los clientes proporcionan valiosa información para innovar, y que la aplicación del diseño y la adquisición de maquinaria favorecen las innovaciones de estas empresas. En esa medida, este estudio cualitativo contribuye a identificar aquellos factores que ayudan a las empresas de manufactura peruanas a mejorar su capacidad de innovación. Así, los gerentes de las empresas de manufactura deben identificar aquellos factores que favorecen la implementación de innovaciones y, de esta manera, lograrán que sus empresas sean más competitivas.

This paper aims to analyze how capabilities are developed and arranged to generate economic positive results in two complex product systems (CoPS) firms. In this context, this paper is a case study based on interviews with the Shipbuilding and Offshore Industry in Brazil covering the overall characteristics of the firm's capabilities. Results show that, out of the four innovation capabilities, there is a difference in the predominance and importance of them in each firm. The essence of this difference seems to be in the technological content of each firm which will require diverse capabilities' configuration. The results from these two CoPS firms, corroborate with the finding of previous studies that the success of any firm relies on the predominance of at least one of the four capabilities. As this study is conducted in Brazilian Shipbuilding and Offshore firms, this implies that the generalizability of this study's findings is limited to firms in Brazil and cannot be applied to other markets without a further validation. This empirical research has extended our understanding about the relation between innovation capabilities and CoPs. Also, the obtained findings offer the Brazilian executives and managers strategic insights in relation to need to develop innovation capacities even in complex productive structures. The academic value of this research is the analysis of CoPS through the perspective of innovation capabilities. Besides that, the analysis of a re---emergent industrial sector in a developing country context.
