Technological Innovation and Exports: Unpacking Their Reciprocal Causality

Abstract: The authors aim to advance extant understanding of the dynamics of firms operating abroad by considering the effects of innovation (research-and-development intensity, product and process innovations) on exports (breadth and depth), and vice versa. The study analyzes a panel data set of 696 Spanish manufacturing firms during 1994–2005 using Tobit and logit regressions and the Granger test of causality to offer a more complete picture of this complex relationship. They find broad support for the notion that inn… Show more

“…Finally, Filipescu et al (2013) propose a study which concerns the reciprocity between export and innovation in the Spanish context. Export is measured according to two categories: the scope of the export activity and its intensity.…”

“…On the other hand, certain studies put forward a bidirectional relation through which there seems to be a mutual strengthening of export and innovation, but this strengthening takes a different form according to the direction of the causality considered. The impact of innovation on export is not an exact mirror of the impact of export on innovation (Filipescu et al, 2013). So, the link between innovation and export does not seem to limit itself to a simple cause-and-effect relationship.…”

“…On the other hand, central hypotheses are based on solid literature and it makes researchers presume a bidirectional relation. Future research could be validated through the use of panel data to predict if the innovative capability increases the probability to accede foreign markets (e.g., Cassiman and Golovko, 2011;Filipescu, et. al., 2013;Monreal-Pérez, et.…”

“…An attempt to explain the different performance of nations in international markets may be in the relationship between innovation and exporting performance (FILIPESCU et al, 2013;ROPER;LOVE, 2002). In this sense, Zou and Stan (1998) identified several indicators, both quantitative and qualitative, for exporting performance such as Export Intensity and Innovation.…”
