Technological Explorations in the Move to Online Mathematics Support

Abstract: Due to Covid-19, mathematics support at Maynooth University transitioned from in-person to online over a very short period in March 2020. This paper provides a brief description of the technologies used by six tutors to facilitate this move. We outline why the tutors picked these technologies and how they used them. We also consider the issues tutors wanted to resolve and reflect on the outcomes of their experiences.

“…to mitigate these issues but not every student had such luxuries" (p. 344). Specific to tablets, previous studies perceive this tool as an important part of teachers' work (e.g., Cárdenas et al, 2021;Heraty et al, 2021) and. This scenario was not the case for other participants.…”

“…Our second theme is the adaptations that math tutors pursued in the attempts to transition from offline learning into online learning. The previous study such as Heraty (2021) considered this adaptation as including exploration of technology. Another study by Johns and Mills (2021) mentioned that tutors are better to be familiar with the online system and be aware of students' needs of both synchronous and asynchronous modes.…”

“…Digital and remote learning: Includes articles concerned with online videos, screen annotations, and similar technologies. Note that the plot of popularity over time (Figure 2(e)) shows a sudden increase in volume 19, as articles related to the COVID-19 pandemic start to emerge (Heraty, 2021;Jones, Meyer and Huang, 2021).…”
