Technological and Consumer Strategies to Tackle Food Wasting

Abstract: Around one third of the globally produced food is annually discarded worldwide This amount 10 would be able to satisfy ten times the need of undernourished people. If nothing is done, the mass of 11 discarded food could further rise, compromising the right to food of future generations. 12 Almost all food discards are nowadays disposed of or used for energy recovery. Strategies for 13 recovery of value-added compounds have also been proposed. However, more sustainable options 14 are available. In this context,… Show more

“…Additionally, many studies pointed out that product packaging is an effective information carrier for raising consumer awareness and changing behavior. Instead of only providing data and storage related information, packaging can also present the impact of food waste issues to consumers [25]. Moreover, a detailed explanation of labeling terminologies and storage methods should also be included on product packaging [8,21,75].…”

“…This information includes detailed explanation of the meaning of the "Best before" date [23,70,71]; explicit guidance about whether it is safe to taste the content and then make a judgment [21,22,60]; innovative ways to show product freshness on packaging [19,79]; tips about how to better assess product freshness by using sensory perceptions [14,58]; and brief descriptions about food waste issues [58]. Some consumers refuse to trust date labels and lack of correct understandings on different date labeling terminologies [17,[25][26][27]59,61,70].…”

At present, in most Sustainability 2019, 11, 3173 2 of 12 applications, food waste monitoring and measurements are carried out manually [7], which is labour intensive, time-consuming, and often exposed to inconsistency and human errors [8], which leads to a commonly reported need for automated and accurate data collection procedures and systems to reduce food waste [9].…”
