Technological adaptation and the emergence of Levallois in Central Europe: new insight from the Markkleeberg and Zwochau open‐air sites in Germany

Abstract: The introduction of the Levallois method in Europe is considered the technological innovation that marked the beginning of the Middle Palaeolithic. In North‐Central Europe, early evidence of this new concept of flake production is dated at the junction between Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 9 and MIS 8, a period that showed a deterioration of climatic conditions, i.e. a change from forested to cold tundra–steppe vegetation and dispersal of the Mammuthus–Coelodonta faunal complex from artic territories. This study … Show more

“…The intermediate core morphologies, characterised by a hierarchisation of the flaking surfaces and core configuration with secant fracture planes, are considered hierarchised, and discriminated on the base of the direction of detachments (e.g. unidirectional, bidirectional or centripetal) as described in Picin 79 , Picin et al 80 . The study of the flake assemblage is performed by analysing the presence (cortex > 50% = cortical flake; cortex < 50% = semi-cortical flake) or absence of cortex, the number and direction of detachments on the dorsal face, the angle and the type of striking platform, the flaking axis, the presence of knapping accidents (e.g.…”

“…Levallois and blade production techniques arrive with regionally dependent variation, and yet no matter when and where they first appear, changes to the cognition, anatomy, diet, and behaviour of hominins are inferred (e.g. Villa, 2009;Shipton, 2016;Picin, 2017;Akhilesh et al, 2018;Pappu and Akhilesh, 2019;Mathias et al, 2020;Moncel et al, 2020a;Meignen and Bar-Yosef, 2020).…”

“…47% of the ‘prepared cores’ category; ca. 6% of total cores) are defined, based on Picin [ 96 ] and on recent work by Rosenberg-Yefet and Barkai [ 35 ], and Rosenberg-Yefet et al [ 92 ] as cores in which the volume is divided into two hierarchical surfaces, a striking platform and a flaking surface, with a partial or complete intersecting ridge separating the two surfaces. Striking platforms are usually prepared, and lateral and distal convexities of the flaking surface are configured by either debordant flakes or by preparational flaking of the core circumference.…”
