Technoeconomic Analysis of Alternative Pathways of Isopropanol Production

Abstract: The price fluctuations and unpredictability of a secure supply of fossil fuels create uncertainty in chemical production. One of the chemicals impacted by uncertainty is isopropanol, which has traditionally been manufactured from propylene. The shale gas boom has led to propylene shortages. Along with the high growth rate of propylene basedproducts, the propylene market has been tight and prices are expected to increase. Therefore, it is necessary to identify alternative, cost-effective, and sustainable pathwa… Show more

“…The formation of CO 2 in the WGS makes that this process has to include a capture stage for increasing the volumetric concentration of H 2 . Traditional technologies for removal of CO 2 comprise ammine absorption, 53 pressure swing adsorption, 54 and filter/membrane operations. 55 In this sense, Meramo-Hurtado et al 56 analyzed in detail the environmental effects of implementing these process units for purification of H 2 , showing a better performance (from the environmental viewpoint) for membrane/filter technologies.…”

“…It can provide resilience by production-line monitoring, predictive maintenance, smart decision-making, and by providing real-time visibility into raw materials, workforce, and products. Artificial intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Augmented Reality (AR) can be the crucial elements to accelerate monitoring and training on resilience and productive manufacturing while FIGURE 10 | Alternate pathways for mitigating disruption or insufficiency in propane feedstock to produce isopropyl alcohol (adapted from Panjapakkul and El-Halwagi, 2018).…”

“…Consider the following example for the production of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or isopropanol which is a common ingredient in hand sanitizers. A typical route for IPA production is to start with propane as the primary feedstock which is converted to propylene via dehydrogenation (Agrawal et al, 2018) then hydration is used to yield IPA (Panjapakkul and El-Halwagi, 2018). Suppose that the supply of propane gets disrupted because of a natural disaster or becomes insufficient because of a sudden surge in the demand for IPA (as was the case in the US following the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic).…”

“…Furthermore, this study discovered that examining economic potentials and profitability could provide important information for decision-making about the possibility of scaling up chemical processes and bioprocesses, based on published investigations. Economic performance is one of the most important factors to consider when designing chemical processes (Meramo-Hurtado, et al, 2020;Carvajal, et al, 2016;Panjapakkul & El-Halwagi, 2018).…”
