“…Sequential extraction of microalgal lipids can also be considered as a new strategy for the efficient extraction of lipids (Lee et al 2020 ). Such integration in unit operations can be used to achieve effective extraction of lipids with a minimum number of processing steps (Table 6 ).…”

“…In this method, the solvents used for the extraction can penetrate the cell membrane and efficiently interact with the intracellular lipids, which helps in the easy extraction. Moreover, the use of a specific solvent, during cell disruption will help to prevent the degradation of targeted lipid and reduce the release of unwanted impurities in the crude extract which thereby simplifies the subsequent downstream process (Lee et al 2020 ). This single-step sequential extraction can also be used for the processing of wet biomass, which excludes the incorporation of the drying process and can reduce the cost in microalgal biorefinery.…”

“…Microalgae have been examined as a potential target to extract lipid for biofuel production due to their economical-friendliness and environmental-friendliness [39,40]. Furthermore, recent studies have been shown to enhance microalgae for further biofuel production [41][42][43]. Figure 2 shows the bioethanol production using bioengineered microalgae Synechocystis sp.…”

“…Moreover, microalgae possess molecules that can act as biopesticides, thus protecting the plant against pathogens, mainly fungi or bacteria. Specifically, the production of antibiotics and siderophores from Chlorella and Scenedesmus and other marine or freshwater microalgae has been previously described (Mendiola et al 2007;Lee et al 2020;Alsenani et al 2020). However, although the use of ultrasound for the control of cyanobacterial and microalgal blooms has been widely studied, the application of sonicated extracts for phytostimulation and plant disease control is a novel topic for which only very recent references are available.…”
