Technical Note: Preliminary estimation of rockfall runout zones

Abstract: Rockfall propagation areas can be determined using a simple geometric rule known as shadow angle or energy line method based on a simple Coulomb frictional model implemented in the CONEFALL computer program. Runout zones are estimated from a digital terrain model (DTM) and a grid file containing the cells representing rockfall potential source areas. The cells of the DTM that are lowest in altitude and located within a cone centered on a rockfall source cell belong to the potential propagation area associated … Show more

“…A successful application to rockfall is presented in Michoud et al (2012) by using the SFLM approach. This algorithm has similarities with the CONEFALL method (Jaboyedoff and Labiouse, 2011), and resulted in quite similar zonation, sometimes even more realistic due to better integration of the topography. Block release frequencies were first assessed and then propagated with Flow-R to result, after calibration, in a regional hazard map for rockfall.…”

“…In the last few decades several papers have been based on this approach (e.g. Copons et al 2009;Jaboyedoff, Labiouse 2011;Blahůt et al 2013) and the typical value of the shadow angle is around 27° (Copons et al 2009). …”

“…CONEFALL locates the rockfall propagation zone within the area that is delimited by the intersection of the energy line with the slope surface. Jaboyedoff and Labiouse (2011) have reviewed the theoretical backgrounds of CONEFALL operation. In this study, high-resolution DEM based on the airborne LiDAR was used as the input data.…”
