Technical note: Open-paleo-data implementation pilot – the PAGES 2k special issue

Abstract: Abstract. Data stewardship is an essential element of the publication process. Knowing how to enact data polices that are described only in general terms can be difficult, however. Examples are needed to model the implementation of opendata polices in actual studies. Here we explain the procedure used to attain a high and consistent level of data stewardship across a special issue of the journal Climate of the Past. We discuss the challenges related to (1) determining which data are essential for public archiv… Show more

“…For example, cross-checking on nomenclature used to assign dated years as astronomical dates (including a "year 0" BC) or as AD/BC with no zero year, and making sure there is a clear statement of this associated with the submitted data, metadata, dissected samples and remnant material (retained at the tree ring host institution). As for all IntCal data the aim is to move towards improved data stewardship and public archiving or open access in line with recent standards (Kaufman et al 2018). By standardizing the criteria required for the preparation of tree-ring samples for annual 14 C analysis and the submission of these data and metadata to IntCal the aim is to ensure the very best compliance in open-data standards.…”

“…Affiliated journals could use their leverage to promote more stringent reporting standards. As an example, the recent PAGES 2k special issue of the journal Climate of the Past piloted the implementation of open‐data practices, which included some reporting standards, and reported the challenges faced when requiring such practices (Kaufman et al, ). Another avenue for promoting best practices, including adoption of reporting standards, is through professional paleoscience organizations such as PAGES and INQUA.…”

“…A major product of Phase 2 was a special issue of Climate of the Past titled "Climate of the past 2000 years: regional and trans-regional syntheses". This special issue also focused on putting into practice open-access data stewardship principles (Kaufman et al 2018).…”
