Abstract: A comparison of the dynamic performance characteristics of two misaligned crankshaft bearings belonging to a four-stroke petrol engine is carried out in this paper. The misalignment considered varies in magnitude during the running cycle. An innovative structural system of magnetic-hydraulic double-floating journal bearing is designed to improve the ability to resist offset loads. By considering the magnetic force to the water-lubricated journal bearing and the magnetic structure design, a force model of the innovative bearing is proposed. The magnetic force and water film force for the bearing are simulated by comparing the load-carry capacity of only water film force. Experimental results showed the load-carry capacity and stability test of the innovative bearing. The design of innovative bearing with the upper suction and lower magnetic repulsion based on the Halbach array can provide a larger supporting magnetic force. The axially non-uniform magnetic structure deployment can manipulate the changes of the magnetic force in the axial direction to hold the offset load. The test found that by comparing the traditional water-lubricated bearing, the bearing has a certain vibration suppression ability in the vertical direction. Under the test speed, the bearing stiffness hardly changes with the change of the speed, which also shows a slightly decreasing trend with the increase of the excitation frequency.

In actual operation of an engine, the crankshaft will move along the axis direction of engine main bearings under the combined influence of various influencing factors. Considering the axial movement and crankshaft deformation, a new lubrication model of engine main bearings with rough surface was built based on the average Reynolds equation. The influence of axial movement of deformed crankshaft on performance of main bearing with rough surface was studied. In this study, the axial movement law of deformed crankshaft is measured through experiment, and the finite element method was applied to solve the tilting of crankshaft in the bearing bore resulted from the crankshaft deformation. The results show that the axial movement of deformed crankshaft has a significant impact on performance of main bearing with rough surface. No matter whether or not the surface roughness is considered, the journal center trajectories of main bearings are unclosed three-dimensional space curve due to the axial movement of deformed crankshaft. The influence level of the axial movement of deformed crankshaft on lubrication characteristics of main bearings is directly related to the surface roughness. The influence trend and level of the surface roughness on lubrication characteristics of main bearings are obviously changed when considering the axial movement of crankshaft.

Comparison of the characteristics of aerostatic journal bearings considering misalignment under pure-static and hybrid condition

In this paper, the steady-state characteristics, including film pressure, load capacity, stiffness, misalignment moment of aerostatic bearings considering two types of misalignment (along vertical direction [Formula: see text] and along horizontal direction [Formula: see text]) are studied under pure-static and hybrid condition. The journal misalignment effects on the steady-state characteristics under pure-static condition and hybrid condition are studied comparatively. The results show that the load capacity and stiffness increase with the increase in the degree of journal misalignment under hybrid condition, while they decrease with the increase in the degree of journal misalignment under pure-static condition. Moreover, the journal misalignment along two perpendicular direction effects on the performances of aerostatic bearings are also investigated comparatively and the performances of bearing are found to be more sensitive to the misalignment along horizontal direction.
