Technical equipment for assessment of dental pulp status

Abstract: Assessment of dental pulp status is normally undertaken using thermal or electrical tests that indicate the functioning of Aδ nerve fibers. The tests are quick and usually reliable, although nothing is absolute. Newer tests have involved assessment of blood flow, and of these laser Doppler flowmetry has been the most widely used and beneficial to patients particularly after traumatic injury. The high cost of flowmeters and the time‐consuming procedure have limited uptake.

“…It is important to assess pulp vitality prior to undertaking extensive tooth preparation in order to improve the prognosis of the restoration. It is also desirable to confirm periodically the pulp vitality in teeth that have undergone pulp preservation procedures or have had extensive restorations [53].…”

“…Importantly, performing repetitive tests will tend to relax the patient, build confidence, and reduce the probability of a false response (Cohen & Hargreaves 2006). To improve objectivity, the tests should be repeated after a recovery period of 1 min, unless too much discomfort has been caused (Ruddle 2002a, Pitt Ford & Patel 2004).…”

“…There is no accurate or objective method of assessing how responsive the tooth under investigation is to any particular test or of comparing with a previous measurement. In contrast, EPTs have numerical displays, which allow the report to be compared with previous readings (Pitt Ford & Patel 2004) although many clinicians do not believe these readings are reproducible and simply look for a response or no response (Cohen & Hargreaves 2006). No studies have demonstrated whether the readings shown on the numerical display have any particular meaning or whether they are reproducible.…”

“…Kerr et al (1) reported that if a disease is present, it is necessary to describe it and classify it within certain limits, namely, to know the type of lesion, the tissue involved, the etiologic agent, or whether it represents a developmental disturbance. All these factors associated with the diagnostic process (signs, symptoms, and complementary examinations) are integrated in developing the differential diagnosis and the treatment alternatives (1,2).…”
