Technical Drawing Learning Tool‐Level 2: An interactive self‐learning tool for teaching manufacturing dimensioning

Abstract: This work presents an interactive self-learning tool named Technical Drawing Learning Tool-Level 2—TDLT-L2—for teaching manufacturing dimensioning to engineering students. The tool was designed for the students enrolled in the first year of the Bachelor in Management and Mechanical Engineering of the Universities of Brescia and Udine. It consists of a simple interactive tool, based on video and drawing animations, aimed at demonstrating the connection between real and simple machining processes and workpiece d… Show more

“…PDF-3D could be considered as a promising tool to be used in the teaching-learning process of engineering degrees to overcome problems related to spatial visualization, which is a serious matter for engineers who must carry out tasks during their student life [4] and also during their professional careers [35,36]. The design process of a PDF-3D is simpler than the design process used in other interactive computer-based tools, and PDF-3D is sufficient for the required aims in the teaching-learning process developed in engineering studies.…”

“…In general, TD courses development, based on TDEG, is characterized by these activities: (1) definition of course prerequisites (knowledge, skills, and competences) that students should have acquired in previous courses; (2) definition of the level of competences of the TDEG that must be achieved with the specific course; (3) definition of the methods for students’ assessment; and (4) definition of the specific teaching methods to be used. Until now, using this approach, the already developed and validated TD tools are the exercise workbook (Figure a) ; the Technical Drawing Learning ToolsLevel 2—TDLT—L2 (Figure b) which is a self‐learning tool designed to better understand the different dimensioning types and related concepts , and the webcomic stripe “The adventures of Mr. Clumsy, the engineer” (Figure c) as a tool to improve students' motivation and their participation during the TD lessons .…”

“…For example, comic book stories can be useful to break the ice with the most struggling students. As Metraglia et al (2014) say, comics tell the typical work situations in a funny way, or they help self-recover prerequirements gaps (Baronio et al 2016). The most advanced instruments tested by Violante et al (2016) for online learning environments with three-dimensional functions should also be evaluated.…”
