An exact knowledge of the mechanical and optical properties of crystals allows not only for theoretical advances, but it is also a useful tool to asses crystal quality in the technological processes of growth and production of advanced crystals like, eg, scintillators. In this paper, we study the elasto‐optic behavior of tetragonal crystals to evaluate the photoelastic constants, associated to various states of stress, in terms of the components of the piezo‐optic tensor. Moreover, we arrive at a generalization, for tetragonal crystals, of the Brewster law for optically isotropic materials.

The exclusive charmonium production process inpp annihilation with an associated π 0 mesonpp → J=ψπ 0 is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the J=ψ → e þ e − decay channel with the AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt (PANDA) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including thepp → π þ π − π 0 andpp → J=ψπ 0 π 0 reactions are performed with PANDAROOT, the simulation and analysis software framework of thePANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done atPANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.

Abstract. The design and construction of a recoil detector for the measurement of recoil protons of antiproton-proton elastic scattering at scattering angles close to 90• are described. The performance of the recoil detector has been tested in the laboratory with radioactive sources and at COSY with proton beams by measuring proton-proton elastic scattering. The results of laboratory tests and commissioning with beam are presented. Excellent energy resolution and proper working performance of the recoil detector validate the conceptual design of the KOALA experiment at HESR to provide the cross section data needed to achieve a precise luminosity determination at the PANDA experiment.
