Technical and Economic Criteria to Select Pavement Surfaces of Port Handling Plants

Abstract: A port is an intermodal system in which many logistics activities requiring properly constructed areas occur. The large extension of these areas poses a major problem in choosing materials with technical and economic implications. Choice and design of pavements are directly related to the port handling systems and procedures for the disposal of the cargo units. The paper presents the design and verification procedures for three equivalent pavements for a handling pavement in an Italian medium-sized port traffi… Show more

“…Although not modeled in FAARFIELD 1.42 [18], a geosynthetic sheet underlay was provided to avoid contamination of the subbase layers with fine material of the subgrade [18]. Finally, the results from FAARFIELD were verified using the Westergaard theory [20]: the maximum tensile stresses at the bottom of the slab for a load at the interior and at the edge of slab or at the top of the slab for a load at the corner were compared to MOR [41]. Finally, construction costs of each catalogued pavement were calculated using national price lists [42], regional price lists [43,44] and price lists provided by experience of the 8th Gruppo Genio Campale.…”

“…Statistics from America's Infrastructure Report Card published by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) (1) show that U.S. highways and roads are in poor condition from aging, environmental conditions, and traffic overload. A pavement crack is a critical failure of a pavement structure and presents a potential threat to transportation systems (2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7). Pavement cracks are the most significant type of pavement distress that has been studied for years because of the complicated pavement crack patterns (8).…”
