Technical and economic aspects of oxygen separation for oxy-fuel purposes

Abstract: Oxy combustion is the most promising technology for carbon dioxide, originated from thermal power plants, capture and storage. The oxygen in sufficient quantities can be separated from air in cryogenic installations. Even the state-of-art air separation units are characterized by high energy demands decreasing net efficiency of thermal power plant by at least 7%. This efficiency decrease can be mitigated by the use of waste nitrogen, e.g., as the medium for lignite drying. It is also possible to store energy i… Show more

“…[490,491] It could be further decreased if a lower O 2 purity is accepted. [492] Customers with a large O 2 demand like steel plants are supplied by short pipelines. Smaller customers with less than ≈1000 m 3 O 2 h −1 were provided by tank trucks with LOx (Liquid Oxygen).…”

“…One of the simplest systems for recovery of liquid nitrogen exergy is direct expansion cycle (figure 2). Liquid nitrogen from cryogenic vessel is pumped (1)(2) to high pressure, then it is heated in HX1 (2-3) using ambient as a heat source. Then it is expanded in 2 stage expander (3-4 and 5-6) with reheating in HX2 (4-5).…”

“…In recent years also the use of oxygen in power generation is investigated. Oxy-combustion is one of promising technologies for reduction ofCO 2 emissions, in this technology pure oxygen is provided to boilers instead of air [1]. The most mature technology of oxygen production is cryogenic air separation.…”
