Propionyl-L-carnitine (PLC) is a naturally occurring derivative of carnitine that plays an important role in the metabolism of both carbohydrates and lipids, leading to an increase of ATP generation. PLC, however, is not only a metabolic drug; it is also a potent antiradical agent and thus may protect tissues from oxidative damage. PLC has been demonstrated to exert a protective effect in different models of both cardiac and endothelial dysfunction, to prevent the progression of atherosclerosis, and, more recently, to improve some of the cardiometabolic alterations that frequently accompany insulin resistance. As a result, most of the clinical trials conducted in humans highlight PLC as a potential treatment option in cardiovascular diseases such as peripheral arterial disease, chronic heart failure, or stable angina, especially when type 2 diabetes mellitus or hyperglycemia (i.e., patients on hemodialysis) are also present. The aim of this review is to summarize the pharmacological effects and possible therapeutic applications of PLC, including the most recent findings to date.

Objective: Examining the effects of simvastatin on skeletal muscles in an experimental model of abdominal sepsis in rats through the biodistribution of 99mTc-sestamibi. Methods: Wistar rats were randomly assigned to 2 groups: with abdominal sepsis (n = 12) and without sepsis (n = 12). Six animals with sepsis and 6 controls were injected with a daily dose of 5 mg/kg/day of simvastatin by gavage for 3 days before induction of peritonitis and 4 hours before surgical procedure. The others received 1ml of 0.9% saline solution orally. The animals were anesthetized with 20mg/kg of xylazine and 50mg/kg of ketamine i.p. Cecal ligation and puncture were performed by laparotomy. The rats were under observation for 24 hours and their survival time was recorded. The animals were re-anesthetized and 0.1 ml of 99mTc-sestamibi was administered by i.v. 30 minutes later,the thigh muscle was biopsied for percentage of radioactivity per gram of tissue (ATI%/g) determination, measured by the automatic gamma counter Wizard Counter, PerkinElmer,Finland. Results: ATI%/g of Tc99m-sestamibi was higher in muscle samples of groups treated with simvastatin sepsis ((1.820.21), compared with saline-treated (1.070.19) and control groups (1.180.31;1.260.24); this is a statistically significant difference (p<0.001). Conclusion: The data resulting from this study allows for concluding that the pre-treatment with simvastatin contributed to a biodistribution increase of 99mTc-sestamibi into the skeletal muscle in the abdominal sepsis model in rats.

Introduction: Ozone therapy is a frequently applied physiotherapy method. There are reports that ozone has a wide spectrum of possible effects. Aim: The aim of the study was to examine a possible influence of the water baths with ozone on lower limbs muscles perfusion in patients with gonarthrosis. Materials and methods: 30 patients (mean age 62,3±11,0 years) with gonarthrosis (II-III degree according to Seyfried's scale) were included in the study. The patients were assigned to three groups: • Group A (10pts)-water massages with ozone + exercises (kinesitherapy) were applied in this group • Group B (9pts)-water massages without ozone + exercises (kinesitherapy) were applied • Group C (11pts)-kinesitherapy alone was applied. All the patients realized the same kinesitherapy program. Radioisotopic examinations of the lower limbs muscles perfusion in rest were performed before and after the treatment. Results: the study revealed a significant lower limbs muscles perfusion increase in the group A (water massages with ozone were applied in this group). A slight perfusion increase was also observed in other groups (B and C) but the differences were not statistically significant. No patient had any adverse reaction after the applied treatment. Conclusions: The study revealed a significant lower limbs muscles perfusion increase after hydrotherapy with ozone procedures. The results confirm that ozone has a positive influence on microcirculation. Ozonetherapy can be recognized as a safe method as no adverse reactions during and after the treatment were observed in the study.
