Technetium-99m methoxyisobutylisonitrile scintigraphy in the assessment of cold thyroid nodules

Abstract: The study demonstrated that Tc-MIBI scanning can be complementary to other diagnostic techniques in patients with cold thyroid nodules. In addition, because of its availability, rather low cost, simple protocol, and objective semiquantitative information, Tc-MIBI scanning seems to hold promise in routine imaging of cold thyroid nodules.

“…99m Tc-MIBI scintigraphy is a method capable of excluding malignancy of hypofunctional TNs with high accuracy [32], of up to 92.2% [33]. Preinterventional rule out of malignancy on cold nodules was done by both 99m Tc-MIBI scintigraphy and FNAB, as the sufficiency for that task of 99m Tc-MIBI scintigraphy alone is still academically discussed [33].…”

“…Thus, the specificity and positive predictive value (PPV) of MIBI scan are always quite low in these patient settings 5, 18 . Quantitative analysis of MIBI thyroid scan has proven to increase diagnostic accuracy 21 . Saggiorato 19 first evaluated the tracer Retention Index (R.I.) by using a semi-quantitative method based on the ratio between uptake within the nodule and the normal thyroid tissue uptake.…”
