Having everyone on the "same page" in teams working toward a common objective is essential to effective teamwork, yet an integrative understanding of factors that enhance these shared mental models (SMM) is absent from the evidence base. We addressed this gap in the literature via a prospectively registered (https://bit.ly/2I7zJzz) systematic review of five databases to identify eligible studies and statistically synthesize evidence from 36 lab or field experiments (131 effect sizes, N participants = 6,209, N teams = 1,912) that tested the effectiveness of team development interventions (TDI) for enhancing SMM among adults where participants were randomized to experimental groups. Via a three-level random effects meta-analysis, we found a positive and significant medium-to-large overall effect of TDI on SMM, g = .61, 95% CI [.41, .82]; sensitivity and meta-bias analyses (e.g., risk of bias, Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations [GRADE] assessment) generally supported the robustness of this overall effect. Moderator analyses indicated that outcome assessment method meaningfully altered the overall pooled effect, with stronger effects observed when outcomes were researcher-assessed. Nevertheless, our assessment indicated low certainty in the quality of the evidence and "noisiness" in the overall estimate (i.e., prediction interval of −0.66 and 1.89). Overall, this study contributes new knowledge on the antecedents of SMM that can inform theory regarding the nomological network of this concept, as well as methodological insights that can improve the evidence-base in future work.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to review the scholarship on political skill and political will so that the authors might inspire future work that assesses these constructs individually and in tandem.Design/methodology/approachThe “political skill” and “political will” concepts were introduced about 40 years ago, but they only have been measured and produced empirical results much more recently. Since that time, substantial research results have demonstrated the important roles political skill and political will play in organizational behavior. This paper provides a comprehensive review of this research, draws conclusions from this work and provides a meta-theoretical framework of political skill and political will to guide future work in this area.FindingsScholarship in this area has developed quite rapidly for political skill, but less so for political will. The authors hope that recent developments in a political will can set the stage for scholars to create a theoretical and empirical balance between these two related constructs.Originality/valueThe authors corral the vast and widespread literature on political skill and will and distill the information for scholars and practitioners alike.

Play and psychological safety: An ethnography of innovative work

Based on ethnographic field research in a high‐tech firm, we develop a process study of the complex and highly recursive relationship between play and the psychological safety that is key to innovation. Through our focus on play episodes, we identify several distinct play practices: generalized initiation of play, amplifying play, diffusion of play, and engagement in demonstrative behavior. We show how these practices generate psychological safety via two mechanisms: vulnerability and comradeship. Psychological safety is both a result and a reinforcer of play practices. Once established, psychological safety fosters several work processes on which innovation rests, namely engendering new ideas, finding collaborators, intensifying effort, and addressing difficult conversations and conflict. By articulating the mechanisms and feedback loops connecting play practices with psychological safety, our inductive model advances the understanding of the conditions that enable innovation in contemporary organizations.
