ABSTRACT:The present paper introduces a tool, which simplifies the description of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) applications by means of a visual language and automatic generation of executable code. The tool has been used to provide non-experienced students with a practical introduction to WSN concepts in a short period of time. Using the tool allowed students to quickly develop their own applications and test with them, focusing on their functional aspects rather than on programming and platform-dependent matters. This has yielded good results in the adaptation to the new European Higher Education Area (EHEA) envisaged by the Bologna Process, promoting an increased role of students in education as well as improving their motivation.

Learning processes and learning mechanisms are constantly evolving. The traditional classroom boards are replaced by Internet technologies, while the old handwritten notes are progressing to electronic notes. Through this evolution offered by new technologies, such as Web 2.0 and mobile and ubiquitous computing, learning agents need to adjust to this new reality. Distance, electronic, and mobile learning offer methods, technologies, and content, which decrease the limitations of traditional learning. Mobile learning is an extension of distance education, supported by mobile devices (e.g., smart-phones or tablets). It is an emerging learning model and process, which requires new forms of teaching, learning, contents, and dynamics between actors. This paper proposes a system architecture that supports distance and mobile learning. This architecture considers four layers, supporting professors and students activities, and learning and evaluation processes through innovative and intuitive user interfaces. The system is supported by several technologies including context and location awareness, pervasiveness, ubiquity, and intelligent agents. It demonstrates how recent technologies can interact together to improve distant and mobile learning.

Mobile learning has been receiving increased attention from diverse conferences and publications. The attention is well deserved because, if correctly implemented, it constitutes an efficient complementary tool to the traditional learning methods. Following this idea, we present PortableLab, a mobile learning system that integrates an application developed for mobile devices with Google Android operating system. PortableLab allows students to analyze several poor quality power supply occurrences. For this, the mobile remote laboratory has to connect to a database server where real-time measured data is stored by a local signal processing module. The mobile application was designed as a complementary mean to the classic laboratory lessons. The developed system is a step forward in the development of mobile learning courses, presenting new contents directed for a 'hot' platform. This paper describes the system, giving special focus on the system's overall infrastructure and the chosen technical solutions for the mobile application implementation, as well as on some preliminary results.
