Teaching Mechanism and Machine Theory with GeoGebra

Abstract: Teaching Mechanism and Machine Theory involves the description of mechanisms which are not easy to represent with static drawings. Computer applications are a common way to reproduce the motion of mechanisms. GeoGebra is a free dynamic geometry software with interactive graphics that can help in this task. By introducing mathematical constraints, such as constant distances, intersections, tangency or perpendicularity, it is possible to build a wide range of interactive mechanisms. This software has been used a… Show more

“…However, as the concepts of movement are explained in such books by static figures and arrows, these concepts can be difficult for students to grasp, especially when considering the fact that each individual has a different learning style. Hence, to bridge this gap, modern multimedia methods, such as videos, simulations, and other visual aids, are used, thus creating an interactive and encouraging learning environment [19]. One fundamental in MMT is dynamic geometry environments (DGEs), which allow the establishment of geometric structures.…”

“…It is free of charge and can be used by pupils for both school and extracurricular learning (Kaenders & Schmidt, 2014;Ruppert & Wörler, 2013). According to Iriarte, Aginaga, & Ros (2014), another advantage of GeoGebra is that it operates on all standard system software and can be operated via web browsers as well. This should enable pupils to use GeoGebra in pre-class and in-class phases as well as in individual and group learning spaces and thus facilitate working actively on their knowledge development.…”

“…This understanding supports the urgency of integrating GeoGebra in geometry classrooms. The advantage of GeoGebra is that it operates on all standard system software and can be operated via a web browser as well ( Iriarte et al., 2014 ).…”
