Teaching Lean Six Sigma within A Supply Chain Context: The Airplane Supply Chain Simulation

Abstract: Lean six sigma is a management methodology that firms can employ to achieve substantial improvement in supply chain performance. However, few pedagogical exercises facilitate students' use of a comprehensive set of lean six sigma principles within a supply chain context. We describe the Airplane Supply Chain Simulation that helps students understand how lean six sigma concepts may be leveraged to improve supply chain performance. The basis of this simulation is a four-tier supply chain, consisting of suppliers… Show more

“…The supply chain pedagogical literature offers numerous games and experiential learning tools to teach various elements of SCM as summarized in Table 2 (extended from Hill and Baker, 2016, with five additional citations on supply chain learning games). In addition to articles on Six Sigma by Ellis, Goldsby, Bailey, and Oh (2014) and Swanson (2008) (2011), and Miller, Hill, & Miller (2016). “…This teaching case describes two role play games, which utilize computer network for data transmission and communication. Role play games work well in teaching complex systems and procedures as shown in Ellis, Goldsby, Bailey, & Oh (). The role play game approach in this case not only improves teaching effectiveness for the instructor, but also fosters a highly engaging class for students.…”

“…The game approach works especially well in teaching technical courses to business students (Cronan et al, 2012). As demonstrated in Ellis et al (2014), the complexity of a business supply chain system can be understood much quicker when students played several in-class role play games. In this teaching exercise, students assume the roles of computers and collaborate to imitate typical Hadoop operations.…”

“…Websites such as Marketplace ® Live (2014), http://Responsive.net (2015), and http://forio.com (2015) provide fee‐based games in which inventory is treated as one aspect of managing an organization. Others have developed games to demonstrate the principles of lean manufacturing (Ellis, Goldsby, Bailey, & Oh, ; Vaz de Carvalho, Lopes, & Ramos, ). While these games contain elements beyond the simple control of inventory such as quality issues and facility layout, they do address the “how many” and “when” questions of inventory management.…”
