Teaching laryngeal electromyography

Abstract: To achieve consensus in the methodology, interpretation, validity, and clinical application of laryngeal electromyography (LEMG), a working group on neurolaryngology from the European Laryngological Society (ELS) was founded in 2010. The main task of the working group was to teach key techniques like LEMG procedures. The objective of this study was to collect information on the teaching techniques used and describe them. A multicenter registry was created to analyze the data collected from LEMGs in 14 departme… Show more

“…Further evaluation of the prognostic value of PCA‐EMG and the significance of synkinesia with larger studies and high‐quality recordings are needed. We hope to achieve this in the future with an European LEMG registry using equal evaluation criteria and including training with new examiners …”

“…We hope to achieve this in the future with an European LEMG registry using equal evaluation criteria and including training with new examiners. 5,28 CONCLUSION Inclusion of PCA-EMG improves the diagnostic value of LEMG. However, the relevance of PCA-EMG for prognosis has yet to be shown.…”

“…The European Laryngological Society provided a description of the methods and techniques currently available for laryngeal electromyography and recommended workshops be provided to provide training for larynoglogists on its use in clinical practice for diagnosis of superior laryngeal nerve injury (cricothyroid muscle) and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury (the thyroarytenoid muscle)(Volk, Hagen, Pototschnig, et al., 2012). As follow-up the use of a training workshop for allowing practitioners to develop skills in the practice and interpretation of laryngeal EMG showed encouraging results indicating improved reliability with training (Volk, Pototschnig, Mueller, et al, 2015). A website is now available for training otolaryngologists on how to use these techniques at www.lemg.org.…”

“…First as mentioned above, is the need for clinical training on methods for use of laryngeal EMG in laryngology training (Volk, Pototschnig, Mueller, et al, 2015; Volk, Hagen, Pototschnig, et al, 2012). Accurate procedures are needed to record from the laryngeal muscles during reflex testing.…”

“…Annak érdekében, hogy az említett kérdésekben konszenzus jöjjön létre, a European Laryngological Society (ELS) neurolaryngologiai munkacsoportja célul tűzte ki, hogy meghatározzák a LEMG alkalmazásának irányvonalait. Klinikánk évek óta részt vesz a nemzetközi munkacsoport munkájában, a 2012-ben publikált európai javaslatok módosításában, értékelésében [6,7]. A diagnosztikus eljárás módszertani alapjainak minél szélesebb körben történő megismertetése és az optimális terápia meghatározásában betöltött szerepének bemutatása kiemelt fontosságú, hiszen az utóbbi alapvetően határozza meg a betegcsoport életminőségét is.…”
