Background/Context Teachers enrolled in alternative training and licensure programs may have experiences that lie outside what is considered typical for both preservice teachers and in-service teachers. This article explores the experiences of a growing cadre of “synchronous-service teachers”—including, but not limited to, Teach For America (TFA) corps members— who are teaching full time while also completing coursework in teacher preparation programs. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of the Study This study considers how synchronous-service teachers perceived the education and training they received while enrolled in traditional teacher education coursework, as well as how they interpreted their broader interactions with the teaching profession and teacher education writ large. Research Setting and Participants This research was conducted in the Midwestern United States in a major metropolitan area with a TFA regional presence. Thirty-six corps members who completed coursework at a traditional teacher education institution opted to participate in this study. They were primarily White and female, and most entered TFA immediately following completion of their undergraduate degrees. The majority had little previous exposure to the education discipline. Research Design The thirty-six corps members were interviewed about their experiences while participating in TFA, teaching at their schools, and, especially pertinent to this article, learning at a partner university where TFA corps members in the region completed teacher education coursework. Findings/Results The findings suggest that corps members held primarily negative views about the teacher education coursework they experienced. They complained that the teacher education programming failed to provide immediately applicable insights and lacked rigor and relevance. Yet they also maintained paradoxical expectations about what teacher education, particularly for synchronous-service teachers, should or should not entail. Conclusions/Recommendations The article concludes by suggesting the potential utility of synchronous-service teachers as a conceptual category, noting that these teachers should be considered distinct from others. As such, providing synchronous-service teachers with teacher education programming designed for either preservice or in-service teachers may lead to missed opportunities in terms of professional learning and exacerbate negative sentiments about teacher education. The experiences and opinions of synchronous-service teachers can have considerable significance, particularly when these teachers go on to affect education leadership and policy. In sum, teacher education institutions are at a critical crossroads concerning how and whether to proceed with similar partnerships, especially as alternative recruitment and training programs continue to grow in the United States and beyond.

In this paper, the word-level N-gram language model applicable to Chinese word segmentation in ideological and political education is obtained through large-scale corpus training, and the Chinese word segmentation path in ideological and political education is calculated according to the conditional probability formula. On the basis of the deep learning algorithm, the Chinese participle algorithm is optimized by introducing word frequency deviation and sorted word frequency deviation indexes, and the cut score with the largest value of the participle indexes is taken as the final participle result output. Starting from the current situation, we determine the evaluation indexes of ideological and political education. Meanwhile, we complete the research design of the impact of the socialist core value system and use the SPSS22.0 and Origin2019 statistical software to carry out the research and analysis of ideological and political education. The results show that the index values of the Chinese word separation algorithm based on the 4-gram language model have also been improved by 1.15%, which means that there exists the possibility of practical application of the model in Chinese word separation in ideological and political education. The college students’ identification with the socialist core values at the national, social and personal levels are all at a high level, with values of 4.28±0.82, 4.32±0.75 and 4.61±0.62 respectively. This study improves students’ ideological-political literacy and provides references to their healthy growth.

With the continuous development of innovative education and the growth of the demand for personalized learning, this paper explores the evaluation of students’ learning ability and resource recommendation methods in Civic Education under the guidance of OBE (student-centered, outcome-oriented, continuous improvement) educational philosophy to better achieve the educational goals. By constructing a learning ability evaluation model for Civic Education, this paper establishes a learning ability evaluation and Civic Education resource recommendation model based on Bayesian decision making by using Bayesian Decision Theory’s a posteriori probability for uncertainty reasoning and combining the personalized recommendation function of collaborative filtering algorithm. By analyzing the data of a university’s ideological and political education course in the fall of 2020, this paper not only realizes the accurate evaluation of students’ learning ability, but also tests the model’s effectiveness in learning ability evaluation and resource recommendation. The findings show that students perform well in effective communication, collaboration and independent learning ability, whose evaluation mean values are 0.62, 0.58 and 0.55, respectively. In addition, some students’ learning ability significantly improves after receiving the recommended test questions, with the increase ranging from 34.36% to 36.67%. These findings demonstrate the model’s excellent learning ability evaluation and resource recommendation performance. The research in this paper provides valuable references for evaluating students’ learning ability and resource recommendation in Civics and Political Science education, which can help further improve students’ learning effectiveness and achieve educational goals.
