Teaching emergency situations during a psychiatry residency programme using a blended learning approach: a pilot study

Abstract: Background Emergency psychiatry is an essential component in the training of psychiatry residents who are required to make patient-centred orientation decisions. This training calls for specific knowledge as well as skills and attitudes requiring experience. Kolb introduced a theory on experiential learning which suggested that effective learners should have four types of abilities: concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation and active experimentation. … Show more

“…106 This model elegantly describes much learning in GME. [107][108][109][110][111][112][113] However, with the introduction of big data in the form of EHR measures, the ability to aggregate these data at the trainee level through attribution, and the ability to simultaneously reflect on and learn from hundreds of aggregated clinical experiences through visualization, we find ourselves on the cusp of a new learning method in GME with parallels to the large-scale learning described in the learning health system literature. 114,115 Thus, based on our review findings, we propose a new experiential learning cycle, incorporating elements from Kolb's model and the learning health system, that describes how GME trainees can use EHR data to foster learning.…”
