Teaching Computational Fluid Dynamics Using Spreadsheets

Abstract: The use of spreadsheet programs in teaching the numerical aspects of computational fluid dynamics is explored. Spreadsheets allow the student to investigate important features of numerical algorithms without having to invest the time required to code in a traditional programming language. Thus they represent a short cut to the experiential part of the learning cycle. Four examples are presented with detailed methodology and learning outcomes, including solutions to the basic partial differential equations for … Show more

“…There are other examples of the use of spreadsheets in different areas of engineering education; electrical engineering [8], environmental engineering education [9], chemical engineering [10,11], energy, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics [12,13,14]. Tabor [5] discussed the solution of the Navier Stokes equations in Computational Fluid Dynamics for incompressible fluid flow.…”

“…The trend most likely began with the requirement that laboratory reports be submitted as a computer-generated document, usually using Microsoft Word. The next step likely involves processing data, recorded by pen and paper, using Microsoft Excel [5][6][7][8]. Once the students and instructors became comfortable with these approaches, the stage is then set for the which is an entirely seamless computer-based approach.…”
