When monitoring the long history of empirical instruments for environmental attitude measurement, the Two Major Environmental Value model (2-MEV) with its two higher order factors: Preservation (PRE) and Utilization (UTL) has repeatedly and independently been confirmed. PRE assesses preferences towards conservation of nature and the environment, whilst UTL measures preferences towards utilization/exploitation of nature. The latter, however, does not yet include the positive aspects of benefitting from the (enjoyable) use of nature. Consequently, besides the established 2-MEV-battery, additional items from an "Appreciation of Nature" (APR) scale were applied to an Irish sample of 289 secondary school students (age: M = 14.3 years). Responses to the altogether 30-item battery were applied on an oblique rotation by using the Promax procedure: UTL and PRE appeared as orthogonally related factors, APR correlated to PRE with 0.283. Based on loading scores, the item number for each subscale was further reduced to make the analysis more manageable in educational outreach sites; on those sites, where completing questionnaires may well be quite unpopular, they are very much needed for planning and fine-tuning educational programs. Therefore, extending the 2-MEV scale with an added scale for Appreciation may help: (i) to judge participants' feedback for adjusting/balancing program contents better; and (ii) to promote appreciation as a successful strategy for shifting individuals away from their individual exploitative preferences.

Resumo: O entendimento do público sobre a problemática das Mudanças Climáticas Globais (MCGs) é pouco conhecido no Brasil. O entendimento obtido nessa pesquisa foi pela Percepção Ambiental Pública (PAP) de visitantes ao evento "Desapegue-se" ocorrido na Praça Edmundo Rego na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Um questionário foi aplicado aleatoriamente para o estudo dos conceitos-chaves: a) Meio Ambiente (MA); b) Ambiente Marinho (AM); c) Educação Ambiental (EA); d) Mudanças Climáticas Globais (MCGs); e) Aquecimento Global (AG). Os resultados referem-se a dados coletados entre abril e julho de 2014. Foram 82 visitantes, sendo mulheres a maioria (66%), com nível superior (40%) e faixa salarial predominante de 2-5 salários mínimos. A maioria (entre 70 e 80%) percebe adequadamente as MCGs, o AG, o MA e o AM. A EA é percebida apenas como mudança comportamental por 59% do grupo de visitantes. Foi confirmada a hipótese de que esse público teria informação básica conceitual adequada. Cabe às escolas papel preponderante na apresentação e debate das MCGs.

This work analyses the answers to a questionnaire from 8,285 in-service and pre-service teachers from 23 countries, elaborated by the Biohead-Citizen research project, to investigate teachers' conceptions related to the genetic determinism of human behaviour. A principal components analysis is used to assess the main trends in all the interviewed teachers' conceptions.This illustrates that innatism is present in two distinct ways: in relation to individuals (e.g. genetic determinism to justify intellectual likeness between individuals such as twins) or in relation to groups of humans (e.g. genetic determinism to justify the superiority of some human ethnic groups). A between-factor analysis discriminates between countries, showing very significant differences. There is more innatism among teachers' conceptions in African countries and Lebanon than in European countries, Brazil and Australia. Among the other controlled parameters, only two are significantly independent of the country: the level of training and the level of knowledge of biology. A co-inertia analysis shows a strong correlation between non-citizen attitudes towards and innatist conceptions of genetic determinism regarding human groups. We discuss these findings and their implications for education.
