Teachers' conceptions of nature and environment in 16 countries

Abstract: By using an original framework involving complementary statistical approaches, we investigated the environmental attitudes of 6,379 pre-service and in-service teachers in 16 countries of Europe and its neighbourhood. To test hypotheses about the nature of environmental attitudes, we examined the variation across groups of individuals (between-class analysis), investigated the independent effects of several candidate explanatory factors (orthogonal analysis), and finally inspected potential relationships betwee… Show more

“…However, while the orthogonal factor structure was affected by the rephrasing of several items as simple reverse wording effects on the loading structure, the model turned out as very stable: Slight modifications in item wordings never affected the structure. This stability was demonstrated in various studies, for instance, when the original item battery for adolescents was adjusted to an adult version (for teacher samples) [32] or where some European phrases were accordingly adjusted in samples in subtropical environments [40]. Therefore, relinquishment of exploitative Utilization implied Preservation and vice versa relinquishment of Preservation implied exploitative Utilization [39].…”

“…Munoz et al (2009) mostraram no contexto de dezesseis países (maioria de europeus e africanos árabes) que respondentes europeus (franceses, alemães, italianos, entre outros), percebiam o MA preponderantemente sob a vertente preservacionista. No entanto, em países mais pobres do norte da África (Marrocos, Senegal e Tunísia) a percepção predominante foi pela vertente utilitarista.…”
