This study aims to explore the effect of music education on the acquisition of social values by preschool children. In this study, a quasi-experimental pattern model with the pretest–posttest control group is employed. The Preschool Social Values Scale is used for collecting the data. The participants of this study are 26 preschool children (the experimental and control groups contain 13 children each). Whilst the experimental group underwent 30 minutes of music training twice a week for 10 weeks, the control group pursued their preschool education. Music education with the experimental group consists of activities, where students are active and experience music. Songs containing social values were taught to children in the unity of play music and movement. At the end of the study, the scores related to the social values of the experimental group improved as compared to that of the control group. No meaningful difference was detected between the posttest and follow-up test social values’ scores. Keywords: Music education, social values, preschool education, value education.

El presente estudio se centra en dos beneficios potenciales de la educación musical: a) el aprendizaje socioemocional y, b) la educación en valores, en el contexto de la formación impartida en conservatorios profesionales de Música en la asignatura de Lenguaje Musical. La metodología cualitativa utilizada, a través de la técnica de grupos focales, ha permitido analizar las percepciones del profesorado, alumnado y familias en torno a estos beneficios. Como resultado del análisis, se ha evidenciado una coincidencia entre los interlocutores acerca de la importancia que se le debe otorgar a la educación en valores y el aprendizaje socioemocional en los conservatorios profesionales de música, y, en especial, con el alumnado que presenta necesidades específicas. A pesar de la ausencia de evidencias de planificación consciente de objetivos socioemocionales o relacionados con la educación en valores en la asignatura de Lenguaje Musical, los participantes perciben que la asignatura sí contribuye al desarrollo de los mismos. Se señalan, además, como futuras mejoras: el fomento del trabajo grupal, la interacción y cohesión intragrupal.

This is the final part of research started in 2014 when development of the new National Curricula (NC) was initiated. The role of music education had to be mapped to prove its meaning as a traditional mandatory subject in the NC. According to the research program, different aspects, related to music education (content, integration of art subjects, informal and non-formal music activities, supportive learning environments, etc.), were analysed. The research of 2020 is summarising the values music education can provide for development of educated, responsible, ethical and creative people. The data collected from essays of school students and (future and in-service) music teachers (n=166), were analysed by qualitative methods. The values were classified by the following categories: social, cultural, cognitive, moral, aesthetic, personal. The research results can be used as arguments for developing music education syllabi in the NCs from kindergartens to gymnasia. The whole program of research is already being used for further development of music teacher education.
