Tea Tree Oil as a Novel Antipsoriasis Weapon

Abstract: Psoriasis is a clinical skin disease that is characterized by erythematous scaling plaques and involves the extensor site of the extremities, the scalp and other surfaces of the skin. Tea tree oil (TTO) is considered an essential oil, obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and terminal branchlets of Melaleuca alternifolia. Notably,terpinen-4-ol, the major TTO constituent, has been found to have potent anti-inflammatory properties. It is suggested that terpinen-4-ol may be a novel potential agent against … Show more

“…The Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) [35] represents the most common score for the assessment of psoriasis severity in clinical trials and practice. The accuracy of the PASI as a global score for psoriasis severity and for making therapeutic decisions is more than questionable [31,32,33,36]. On the other hand, reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), a novel non-invasive, in vivo imaging technique, has been used increasingly in recent years for investigating psoriatic skin lesions, which showed a good correlation with histological findings [37,38,39].…”
