TDPAC andβ-NMR applications in chemistry and biochemistry

Abstract: Time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) of γ-rays spectroscopy has been applied in chemistry and biochemistry for decades. Herein we aim to present a comprehensive review of chemical and biochemical applications of TDPAC spectroscopy conducted at ISOLDE over the past 15 years, including elucidation of metal site structure and dynamics in proteins and model systems. β-NMR spectroscopy is well established in nuclear physics, solid state physics, and materials science, but only a limited number of… Show more

“…199m Hg-perturbed angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy [12,13,[16][17][18][19][20] was used to elucidate the metal site structures and dynamics at the nanosecond timescale, see Figure 3a nd Supporting Information Figure S6. At pH 6.0 andH g II :CueR of 0.2 and 1.0, the signals agree well with aH gS 2 coordination geometry,t hat is, coordination of Hg II by two cysteinates.…”

“…The main idea is to combine particles from different Send offprint requests to: a Present address: G.Kornakov@gsi.de collisions, generating an uncorrelated spectrum that after normalization is subtracted from the total same-event distribution, yielding the signal spectrum as their difference. Even though it has been pointed out that the background obtained with this technique has several problems due to the determination of normalization constants, the particle and event class selection or acceptance [9,10,11], it is the most commonly applied method [12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19]. In general, decay products are used to generate the background as well as uncorrelated particles, having commonly different kinematics.…”

“…[5][6][7][8][9][10][11] More recently, several groups have pursued advancing modern incarnations of the technique to study the solution chemistry of β-NMR probes, [12][13][14][15] motivated by its potential to solve chemical and biochemical problems. [16][17][18][19] With the advent of high-intensity radioactive ion beam (RIB) facilities, many new nuclei are available in quantities sufficient for the study of condensed matter. The main challenge to the use of RIBs as probes in liquids is the incompatibility of typical solutions with high vacuum usually applied to achieve optimal RIB transport.…”
