TDCS modulates cortical excitability in patients with disorders of consciousness

Abstract: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)1 has been reported to be a promising technique for consciousness improvement for patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC).2 However, there has been no direct electrophysiological evidence to demonstrate the efficacy of tDCS on patients with DOC. Therefore, we aim to measure the cortical excitability changes induced by tDCS in patients with DOC, to find electrophysiological evidence supporting the therapeutic efficacy of tDCS on patients with DOC. In this stu… Show more

“…Notably, similar spectral shifts and behavioral improvements have been reported with pharmacological agents like Zolpidem [6]. As with Zolpidem, tDCS could have a direct effect on cortical activity, initiating activation of chronically underactive brain regions, as previously shown [7]. This hypothesis is supported by previous tDCS studies showing an increased cortical oscillation activity in the theta and alpha bands in healthy volunteers following anodal DLPFC tDCS [8,9].…”

“…According to his report, it seems that part of this improvement has been due to increased levels of participant`s consciousness. This finding is consistent with studies investigated the effect of tDCS on the level of consciousness in normal people (Lauro et al, 2014) and patients with abnormal levels of consciousness (Zhang et al, 2017, Bai et al, 2017. The reduction of speech rate and decreasing palilalia were other goals of this study.…”

“…Yet, very few studies have investigated the electrophysiological effects of tDCS in DoC patients. Some studies focused on differentiating tDCS impact based on the patients' state of consciousness (50,51). Others used a qualitative analysis of the EEG background activity to characterize tDCS response (24).…”
