TCP switching: exposing circuits to IP

Abstract: Circuit switches have simpler data paths and are potentially much faster than packet switches. Taking advantage of this difference makes very high capacity all-optical circuit switches feasible, whereas all-optical packet switches are a long way from commercial practicality. Peak-allocation, that is eliminating the benefits of statistical multiplexing, is circuit switches' main disadvantage, and what prevents their widespread adoption. However, the rising amount of already abundant link capacity will eliminate… Show more

“…Molinero-Fernandez and Mckeown [18] proposed to implement a technique called TCP switching, in which the TCP SYNchronize segment is used to trigger connection setup and TCP FINish segment is used to trigger connection release. By processing these segments inside switches, the TCP SYN/FIN procedures become comparable to a signaling protocol for connection setup/release.…”

“…Among work from other researchers, the notion of setting up high-speed circuits for end user sessions has been examined in a proposal called TCP switching in [14]. The concept is to classify TCP flows at IP routers and initiate requests for dynamic circuit setup for individual TCP flows through optical circuit-switched networks.…”
